I ride out west and have been riding out west for many, many years and I don't ever see anyone with a secondary shovel. Why would you need a secondary shovel?

For regular stucks so people don't have to take their backpacks off to get to their primary shovel I guess....I don't live out west so I don't ever wear one on my back.

I carry two shovels and four saws gotta be prepared if **** gets real.

I like to keep my vest on. Carry extra shovel in sled solution holder called a bca dozer. Two saws also.
