DENVER – A look at the future of the Interstate 70 Mountain Corridor is now available for public viewing.
For the next 60 days, the public can review and comment on the Revised Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS), a document that presents a corridor vision, which includes a variety of transit and highway improvements, between C-470 and Glenwood Springs. The comment period continues through November 8, 2010.
A copy of the Revised Draft PEIS is available for review at 24 locations (*see below). It also can be viewed on the project Web site: www.i70mtncorridor.com.
Comments can be provided during the review period by:
1. Attending one of the public hearings in October and submitting a verbal or written comment**
2. Submitting a comment through the project Web site
3. Mailing a comment to: I-70 Mountain Corridor, c/o Wendy Wallach, CDOT Region 1, 18500 East Colfax Avenue, Aurora, CO 80011
All comments received during the review period will be considered and addressed in the Final PEIS, scheduled for completion in January 2011. The Record of Decision is expected in spring 2011.
CDOT must first complete and finalize the PEIS before major improvements can be made to the I-70 Mountain Corridor. The environmental impacts must be assessed and all reasonable transportation improvements considered to maintain a productive balance between proposed improvements and natural and manmade resources.
The original draft was released in 2004 and revising the Draft PEIS accounts for activities that have occurred since then. In addition, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) initiated a Collaborative Effort (CE) process in 2007. The CE, a 27-member group representing various corridor interests, was charged with reaching consensus on a recommended transportation solution. CDOT and FHWA were active participants and both agencies committed to adopting the CE’s recommendation in the PEIS.
The Revised Draft PEIS analyzes transportation alternatives and the project’s ability to provide the best opportunity to meet the project’s purpose and need, while minimizing impacts on the surrounding communities. This document provides an initial, thorough analysis of relevant issues through the entire corridor so decisions can be reached on a Preferred Alternative. Smaller, site-specific studies still will be required in the future, provided funding is available.
