My greasy triple

Fosgate’s story inspired me to finally clean up and finish my own greasy triple. It’s been sitting in my little shop for about 7 years now, it was having overheating issues so I had a custom double pass heat exchanger made for it, got that in and life just took a left turn, haven’t had the enthusiasm to get back to it since. Strangely I find myself feeling the need again. This is going to be the year.

Wanted to put a new track in it, going from a polaris series 4 159x2.4 to a camoplast 163x2.5. Put the chaincase in so I could centre the new 3.0 drivers then checked for clearance.

Been awhile, waiting on parts, etc. Got the drivers where they need to be, checked for clearance and cut the fins off the exchangers for the first few inches. Rebearing the jackshaft and mainshaft, both ends, installed the chaincase, jackshaft and brakes. Realized the brake rotor was bent, I must have dropped it? it has been sitting for a long time, pull it apart again and realized the rotor hub is cracked. Search for a new rotor, drill it like the old one, put it all back together again.

Pulled the skid apart, going to rebearing everything. Have to move the rail extensions back to accommodate the longer track. Need to clean up the pipes and weld some wear pads on here and there, refit them. Also installed an arctic cat tether.

Still working on it but keep hitting delays. Now trying to find fuel tank grommets, tracked down two nos ones at a dealer in Cranbrook B.C., thought I was good but turns out the second one is a 0.750 diam. hole as opposed to the 0.0650 factory one. The factory grommet is way to small to fit. Also the wife's tablet I've been taking pictures with died so have been unable to take recent pics. I've got the track in and am going to refit the pipes today, they need the odd wear patch and pin hole fixed. Clutches are done, wiring redone, really close to firing it up again. I'll get her out for a ride this year no matter what.

Looking good!. You'll find when your done you'll have a few extra parts. Find a deal on a common part that fails or wear item or simply parts that are incorrect.

Figured out the fuel tank issue, (see my search for grommets in the general section) another delay for parts but getting close.

When I did mine it was constantly a cycle of parts with 2 week delivery times. Thought I had everything and then break something old or find another item to replace.

Storm based motor? looks like nice rack carbs and the much needed front torque arm on there, very nice. Been looking for a 40mm rack for years

Thats a watercraft based triple.

Are you looking for a rack setup for a storm or a WC?

Looking good Jay!!!!!

Nice to see it coming together!!!!

Looks like youre using an xcr 800 ignition, Im assuming it hasnt been reprogrammed since you have the temp and throttle position sensors plugged in?

It's alive, finally got the fuel tank done and installed, put some gas in it and it fired in 4 pulls, well that and a shot of ether. I'd forgotten what a b!tch she is to pull over. Had a bad moment when I thought I had a leak in my new exchanger but turned out to be spillage from filling it. I've run it a few times, lined up the new track and purged the cooler. Scrubbed the seat as best I can and am now fighting with the airbox. I need some porus foam to cover the intakes and if you've ever tried to put a mod airbox on a triple you know what I mean, might be the hardest part of it all. Found a couple of small cracks in the stingers I missed, you see them when the oil starts leaking out, but overall it's almost ready. I'll try to get some pics up when it's done and maybe a video of it running. She can't compete with the new ones for handling but for just plain fun you can't beat her. If you've never ridden a big triple you need to somehow, nothing on snow pulls like these old girls, seriously it just doesn't stop pulling, amazing power.

Thanks Mattymac, I don’t know if it’s reprogrammed or not. There is a switch for advancing the timing but I think that was factory on the XCR.

Well I finally got the air box on, what a b*tch, I swear that thing shrunk over the years. Now I need some sort of foam to cover the top, it has 2 6” round intake holes. It needs to seal the top of the air box to the hood, I’ll have to install the hood to figure out the thickness I need. Anyone know where I can find some appropriate filter material? similar to the intake foam on a factory sled, maybe described as #30 or #40? Going to give her a good polish then the hood and seat go on and it’s pretty much done.

If I can get the wife's tablet to live long enough I'll get a video of it running. Haven't found any airbox foam and need a rubber cover for the rear of one of the little headlites, heat from the pipes wrecked it. At least it's back together and running again, only took me 8 years to do it.
