air box problems on 91 Phazer

With the airbox on the sled runs like crap at 4500 rpm on up, with it off it runs great. I took the airbox apart and there is nothing clogging it up or anything but the dang sled won't run right with it on. Any suggestions on what may be the real problem?

have you cleaned the carbs?

carbs are clean, I've had them apart and cleaned them like 6 times. I swapped the reeds from cylinder to cylinder and that's when I discovered the airbox problem.

i would start looking at float height. i think its a rich problem and when the air box is on it kills it and when its off it get enough air. not sure though

seems like I remember that there can be a issue if the rubber plugs are in the wrong spot? not for sure its been a while on the Phazers

I checked the butterflies today and they look like they are opening all the way and synced. I'm thinking that one of the chokes is partially open.

Check the rubber plugs. When you have the carbs upside down and the three holes are on the 9:00, 12:00, and 3:00 position, the two plugs on each carb will be in the 12:00 and 3:00 position...assuming my memory is working tonight. When in the wrong place, it will run like the choke is on.
