What happens when you get pro hillclimbers, pro freeriders, ride instructors, industry experts and a hillbilly with a camera together for a summer ride? Well, after three broke or bent sleds, buried trucks and getting off the mountain after sunset (in June), most would say that all hell breaks lose. But honestly, it was a pretty typical ride for these guys.

This year's ride was over June 30 and July 1, near Afton, WY. On Day One it rained. It hailed so badly that you swore your face was bleeding. It was so hot and sunny you wanted to to stick you head in a waterfall and sit in a dark closet for an hour to rest your eyeballs. And that was all within seven hours on the mountain.

Day 2 was high 80s and sun. Dust, mud, rivers, logs and snow. Riding bikes with this group is enough to make you take up knitting.

Most of the crew from the sled ride came back for the dirt ride. Plus a few new additions. The first half of the day was total hillclimbing carnage. Bikes looping out, the sound of cracking plastic ringing down the canyon, guys nearly being run over. And then, on the afternoon single-track mountain ride, things got interesting. Apparently taking fellow snowmobile competitors away from sleds and sticking them on bikes is like taking sticks away from fighting kids and handing them aluminum bats.

I'll keep posting pictures over the next several days. Stay tuned... Happy 4th.

Ride Roster

Here's a lineup of who attended the summer ride this year. We'll go by seniority.

Bret Rasmussen
Preston, ID.
Ride Rasmussen Style
www.riderasmussenstyle.com

Bret was winning hillclimb races before Keith Curtis was even born. He may roll around with an open bottle of ibuprofen in his cupholder, but there's a reason why his videos are named "Schooled." Reminds you of the saying "It's better to be old and wise than young and dumb." Hey, maybe that's why he keeps Sanchez around...

Well, after Bret I'm not sure who's older. If you go by the way they look versus the way they walk, it's tough to pinpoint a list. I gues it's Rocky's ride, so he's next.

Rocky Young

Idaho Falls, ID or Thayne, WY, depending on when you call.
Boondocker
www.boondockers.com

Rocky is a motorhead's motorhead. Snow, dirt, mud, transmission fluid... he's been stuck in it all. He is fun to ride with so long as you don't have a set time or date on when you'd like to return. Rocky kind of put this ride together with a couple of the other guys. And opened up his cabin to anyone who needed a flat surface to sleep on.

Speaking of seniority, Troy is up there somewhere. And you can get that by the way he walks, too. Troy is half man, half NASA space shuttle scrap. He has more titanium in his body than an F-22 Raptor. But he's just as fast as ever, and he's stood on a podium next to Jeremy McGrath.

We used to jokingly call Dan the old man of freeride snowmobiling. Ten years ago. But Dan has a very impressive track record in the sport, from being one of the original Slednecks crew to building custom diesel trucks that appear on covers of all the big diesel mags. And he is wicked good at growing facial hair.

Ok, so we're not going by seniority anymore. Burandt is one of the guys you hear talking during Winter X Games television coverage. He also has gold medals from making noise while other people covered him out there. He's also a bit of a genius because, let's face it, he figured out how to make a living while riding snowmobiles six or seven days a week. He might work summers as a maid at the local bed and breakfast, but that's mostly just for his pocket cash. (Oops, that was supposed to be in the sarcastic font.)

Phatty is the sled community's best friend. He is known for big drops and hitting the jumps that no one else really sees as jumps. And he's really in good physical shape despite the name. Maybe the video camera adds a few pounds...

Easily one of the most competitive riders out there. Dave got the nickname of "More McClure" when one of his "buddies" misread a post I had on here from another ride last season. Now I know that grammar is a second language in some parts of Idaho, but that's just unfortunate. They have trimmed it down to Mo McClure, which rolls off the tongue a little better. But I really do apologize Dave. I would tell Kincaid to knock it off, but he's just so damn funny when he says it. Sorry dude.

Keith just wins stuff. Two seasons ago, Keith's win percentage on the RMSHA circuit was unbelievable. Last season, it was even better. This year, we hear RMSHA is going to give drivers the option of making their entry fee checks out directly to Keith. I will probably get hate mail for that one.
