IDAHO: Island Park/West Yellowstone 2010/11 Snow Reports

Come for the Forum Ride in January!

My guess is we will be all over the mountains in that area.
So a MT sticker would be a good idea.
Not sure if the WY would be needed or not though

As of 7 AM--Dec. 15, 2010:
2 to 11"+ of snow fell in the area in the last 24 hrs. with lots of WIND. We have 5--6 feet of pack above 9,000'.

CONSIDERABLE avalanche hazard is forecast for today. Slabs persist along with layers of facets and some "depth sugar".

I took the plunge and went for the lightest, the pro. I have ridden it three times the first two on hard pack, the last in some powder. You can really feel the difference. It is easier to turn on the hard pack and in the powder. It even turns easier in the powder than the phazer I traded in. I'm not as tired at the end of the day and I get stuck less. I would do it a again in a heart beat. I love everything about the 4 strokes but the weight it can't be ignored.

I KNOW Yamaha could make the Nytro lighter, and I have been hearing rumors all summer long of something cool coming in March...

Will just have to wait and see of the little birds have been telling me the truth or not.

Dec. 18, 2010--7AM UPDATE--
Fremont County has groomed lots of snowmobile trails and groomed again last night.

Mid-winter conditions exist at upper elevations.
Off-trail conditions are fairly "firm" on a settled, dense snowpack.
However, there are areas of "sugar" that you can spin down into, if you aren't careful.
We had the highest November snow totals in 36 years.
We now have approx. 2 to 3 feet in the valleys and 4 to 5 feet at 8,000 feet elevation.

Went riding with 4 others yesterday in the south end of Island Park. We had 2 new riders with us and just wanted to go play in the large meadows. There was a good 24 inches of base, and perhaps 4-6 inches of fresh powder on top. It was nearly impossible to get stuck since the base was so well set up.

Once again, there was just nobody there.
Rode for 6 hours and only saw 2 other people.
As we rode north towards Last Chance the snow got thinner and there were some sage brush tips still sticking through the snow, but there was more than enough to have a good time, especially with new riders.

All the major trails were groomed and in great shape.
Most of the areas we rode in had NO SIGNS of any other sleds having been there. Just wide open tracked meadows!

3rd Saturday we have been to island park and hardly seen anyone, and had great snow at the same time.

Hope it stays like this all winter!

We got 13 inches of fresh powder last night.

Loaded up and headed to go ride over on Two Top today.
Hope for a great day on the mountain!

On the summit of Two Top we had DENSE BLINDING FOG.
Couldn't see more than about 20ft in any direction.
But everywhere other than the summit itself was GORGEOUS.

While the snow is tracked in all the obvious places, get off the beaten path just a bit and there was PLENTY OF FRESH powder to play in and get stuck in!

Dec. 28, 2010--4 PM UPDATE--
We are getting a real DUMP of snow with up to 7" new at the Macks Inn area as of 2 PM today
--and, much more is on the way tonight and tomorrow.

Mid-winter conditions exist at all elevations.
Off-trail conditions are fairly "firm" on a settled, dense snowpack.
However, there are areas of "sugar" that you can spin down into, if you aren't careful.

As of 7 AM--Dec. 29, 2010:
5 to 18" of light density snow fell in the area w/ 1.2" water in the last 24 hrs. along with WIND.
We have 6+ feet of pack above 9,000'.

Avalanche hazard is expected to be to today, and will increase with any new snowfall.
Slabs persist along with layers of facets and some "depth sugar". See NEW Hazard Scale below.

Remember--"Pockets" exist with a higher hazard than the area forecast.

Spent the day riding on the black canyon loop once again.
The snow was SPECTACULAR.
24-30 inches of fresh DRY DRY DRY powder.

None of the trails had been groomed, and there were plenty of drifts to bash through, but the untouched DEEP snow was worth every moment of it!

Today would be simple FABULOUS for riding!
