Well, I got some tracks onto the scale today down at the FedEx store...

Sold some tracks and installing some others.

Actual weight on brand new tracks... not claimed weights..

155" 2009 Polaris Dragon series 5.1 SINGLE PLY track 46.25 lbs

2009 Standard RMK 155 2 ply (Same as 2008 Dragon 155) 2.86" pitch..... 52.80 lbs

163" 2009 Polaris Dragon series 5.1 SINGLE PLY track 2.86" pitch 51.5 lbs

Polaris Series IV 159 x 2.4" track 2.52" pitch (clipped every other, un punched) .... 59.90 Lbs

Camoplast 155 x15 x 2.5, 2.86" pitch 2009 Challenger Extreme 2.86" pitch (full clip).... 55.3 lbs

Camoplast 163 x15 x 2.5, 2.86" pitch 2009 Challenger Extreme 2.86" pitch(full clip).... 62.0 lbs

Arctic Cat 153x2.25" Power Claw 80 Duro 3" pitch 47.10 lbs

Note, I did not personally weigh the Cat tracks but the info came from the shipping scale, no box, of someone I trust.

I hear rumors that the 2010 tracks from Polaris are going to be stiffer and not a mixed durometer.

Track Choices

So who is running the AC powerclaw track on there 800 Dragon and howdo they like it? MH what do you think of the 2009 lightweight dragon track after running it this year.

I think the LW track is great... it takes a while to stretch to final dimensions but good track.

I found the same numbers on the 09 5.1 track and Camo Extreme 2.5, within .5 lbs. Your scale is probably more accurate than mine.

It bothers me that Polaris sacrificed track performance just to lower their weight numbers on the sled.

IMO... they did not sacrifice anything..

They built an all-around track that is usefull for a many different conditions.

If you are part of the 5% or so that are truly performance riders out there (as a hint... ALL of the snowesters dont amount to 5% of the sled owners) then you may need something that gives you higher performance for the turbo, or steep decents in spring snow etc...

The single ply did not give up anything to its heavier 2 ply 5.1 non-Dragon track... If the track tensions are kept within specs.

The Cat tracks dont give up anything... In fact.. I'm running the PowerClaw this year... It is a stellar track AND it is light.

If you are having issues with any tracks performance... check the tension... that may be PART of your problem.

My issue with the 5.1 is that it is too soft to hook up out of the hole (which not only kills drag racing, but good starts to hill climbs). It also has no bite coming down steep hills that don't have 2 feet of powder. It does well in the fluff, but even here in the mountains of Colorado, we don't get to ride in the powder all the time. I didn't have a problem with lugs, but I've seen countless people that have torn lugs off of that track in less than a years time. I had 350 miles on my track when I pulled it off. The lugs were already curled back.

All of that to me is a not so good track. I guess you are right about rider style/ability though. If you are not going to subject your mountain sled to tough conditions, you won't notice these issues. My 2007 Dragon track was a better track.

track weights

I've been told that it takes 1 horsepower to move 12 pounds 50 mph. Within limits weight doesn't mean anything on a mountain sled. The manufacturers went to the lighter tracks to take down the total advertised sled weights.

Bug,
You must have had the 2007 D7 track screwed?? (F-Bomb mod?)

I removed the 2007 D7 track from my sled... and swapped out a 2009 Dragon track on the same sled ....it was night and day better in all conditions. I did run the factory recommended tension and kept it there... I did notice a significant drop in performance when the track tension got loose from it taking its initial stretch but it came right back up with the correct adjustment.

I did trim it down, but before that I thought it did a little better than the 5.1. I will say that on both my D7 and D8 the track came loose quickly when the sled was new (all sleds will do this, but the Polaris' seem to do it quicker). I just don't have much good to say about hte 5.1. I hope the Challenger Extreme is what so many say it is for the trouble I've gone through. Changing a track by yourself is not a lot of fun. Especially in the hot weather.

I'm on the fence with the track decision now for a TD8 (has 09 163" stock track)... love'd the powerclaw on my last sled TM1 however coming back down

... thinking about camo extreme.. but cant decide??

I bet that turbo really spins the 5.1 track in it's place.

As a note... the 3" lug Camo Extremes are only avail in 16" wide 162 and 174" lengths...

They wont even come close to fitting in a 15 wide tunnel.

I'm sure some will tunnel there dragons to make it work. Or I figure if they sell a fair amount they will tool up for 15'' wide but I was just curious more than anything as how much weight gain the 3'' tracks give you.

Let him know that you would like the Camo Extreme 162/174" x 3" lug hieght offered in 15" wide so that you can use it on your sled.

If enough people ask for it, I'm sure it will be offered.
