Toward the exhaust. The easy way to tell if your doing it right is to mark the top of the piston at each ring locating dowel (just one if it's a single ring). Then make sure that point is not going over a cylinder port when your running the piston up and down. That ring gap will catch a port sooner or later if you have it in wrong.

Also on a 2-stroke the piston ring locating pins always go away from the exhaust port.
