JMO save your money and buy a set.
To answer you question tube size varies and so does the thickness of material.

……..
Use 3/8 or 1/2" sch. 40 pipe.

Aluminum comes in 6063-t6 which you can bend with a conduit bender.

Use a piece of 1/8" aluminum against the Tunnel.

Take two.
The second design works much better.

We use 6061-t4 aluminum

The inner tubes are. 3/4" OD x 1/8" wall

The outter rail is 1" OD x 1/8" wall

^ This is a post from B&M last year. I suspect it's still the same. FWIW, my B&M's have held up great thus far with a couple hard seasons on them.

I am working on a set for a Nytro and they are coming along rather well, much better than anticipated. But with that said from my experience it is worth just buying a set and going that route. it has been fun but by the time i have spent money on other things to help along the way I would have saved a ton of money and time (and i have found time to be very valuable lately with an extremely busy lifestyle). Also the failures add up to the cost so in the end you aren't saving as much as expected.
